MEK a colorless liquid with a sharp, sweet odor. MEK is produced in large quantities. Nearly half of its use is in paints and other coatings because it will quickly evaporate into the air and it dissolves many substances. MEK is an effective and common solvent and is used in processes involving gums, resins, cellulose acetate and nitrocellulose coatings and in vinyl films.
MEK dissolves polystyrene and many other plastics. So should avoid storing it inside a plastic container.
MEK is also a solvent used by the ink industry worldwide for packaging gravure products such as coloured inks, primers and heat-seal varnishes. It is necessary for achieving the economical and technical performances required by the printing and packaging industry.
